Willem Blaeu founded a publishing company that created maps in the very early days of map-making and he also learned how to make globes as well. His very first publication with his new company was a map that included sea charts.
Blaeu is also credited with publishing one of the first atlases, which he did in 1630 with the help of his son Joan, who had also taken an interest in cartography after obtaining a law degree. Willem died in 1638 and Joan continued making maps as his father did. Joan started to make a name for himself, just as his father did and was known for publishing Dutch city maps and also an atlas of Scotland. Unfortunately at the height of Joan's career, a terrible fire destroyed his shop and he passed away the following year.
Original Blaeu maps are hard to find and are very sought after by collectors because of their historical significance and high value.
