Notable Cartographer – Aaron Arrowsmith

by admin on December 10, 2008

There are a few mapmakers that are very well known in the antique map world. One such cartographer is Englishman Aaron Arrowsmith. Born in 1750, he became famous internationally for his detail and neatness of his maps. In 1790, Arrowsmith set up his own shop making maps as well as engraving and publishing those maps.

His first large project was "Chart of the World upon Mercator's Projection." It is a very large map published on a number of sheets of paper and exhibits all the discoveries made by well known navigators such as Captain Cook, from the 1700's up until the project began. The accuracy and fine work done on this map made him very sought after, and was offered a job as Hydrographer (person who measures the characteristics of bodies of water) to King William IV. Aaron Arrowsmith also developed maps of new discoveries within North America (1785) and a map of Africa ( 1802). He also contributed to the publication of several atlases, such the Atlas of South India in 1822.
