Lionel has been a leader in the production of model trains since the company was established around the beginning of the twentieth century. Rescued from the brink of bankruptcy and disappearance, today Lionel LLC has brought back quality and innovation in it's modern line of Lionel model trains. It's good to see that an American icon that is a part of many of our childhood memories is able to not only survive now but thrive.
Today the company may look different from the past in terms of it's corporate structure, but one thing remains the same; Lionel's commitment to making high quality model trains that both children and collectors alike can enjoy. Though not as popular compared to the golden age of the late 1940s and early 1950s, model trains haven't gone anywhere and are even enjoying renewed interest. Children today have many more options when it comes to toys including electronic toys like video games that playing with a train set isn't what it once was in terms of popularity.
As adults, many of us can reminisce about our childhood and the Lionel trains we played with. The largest wrapped big box under the Christmas tree on Christmas day in the morning, or finding a new train set up mysteriously set up triggers some great memories for many. As adults with these early happy experiences, the fondness for model trains and railroad layouts remains. Having the resources as an adult allows many of us to fulfill our model railroad wishes building layouts that we could only dream about as children.
After evolving along a rich timeline and history, the modern Lionel model train company is not alone to enjoy the complete market dominance it once held, there are quite a few other mode railroad manufacturers that have garnered a piece of the model trains niche. MTH is one of the new upstart companies that are pushing forward the state of the art with extremely realistic perfect scale locomotives and digital sound effects. Lionel has had to seriously respond to the upped ante that the new companies have created, but they have been able to do so while still honoring the traditions and qualities of their most collectible items from the past. In any case, even with new competition and other manufacturers on the model train scene, model railroaders of all kinds appreciate the history and contributions, past, present and future of Lionel model trains.
