Why Do People Collect Stuff

Surely, most people (if not all), have had something that they started collecting for a long period of time. The things people usually collect are those that they found interesting and meaningful to them. These include, but are not limited to: bottle caps, stamps, leaves, rocks, shells, action figures, figurines, plastic models, t-shirts, key chains, and even stuff worth over a hundred bucks. Collectibles can be anything, really, as long as the person who collects them believe they are worth collecting.

So what are the reasons why people collect them?

Satisfaction – The love of collecting interesting things is present in most people. The satisfaction that a collector feels whenever a piece is added to his collection is quite nice. The feeling of accomplishment is much, much greater when the collection is completed.

Interest – Things that people collect are often those that they are already interested in. Some examples include action figures and comics for superhero fans or figurines for those who like cute stuff such as Precious Moments figurines. Some people’s collections would include those that are currently in style or fashionable for that period of time. The problem with those types of collections is that when the fad is gone, interest in collecting them also wanes.

Fun – Collecting collectibles can be fun so many people do it as a hobby. It is especially nice to see one’s collection growing and like what people would say in a party, the more the merrier.

Trading – There are people who just like to collect rare or limited pieces of certain collectibles and earn a profit out of trading them. On the other hand, there are people who like to collect collectibles that they can use to trade for other stuff, like pieces for their own collection.

Selling – Some completed sets of collectibles can be seen being sold in online trading sites for a really high price. Limited, unique, or rare pieces can also be found being sold for a good price. People who sell pieces or whole sets can either be collectors who are just after the satisfaction of completing them and want to make a profit, or are simply in it just to make money.
